South East England Development Agency is Closing on March 31, 2012

The Government has announced that all Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), including SEEDA, will close by 31 March 2012.

Responsibility for economic development and regeneration in England is being passed onto successor bodies, including Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and central Government departments

Our objective is to ensure a professional and cost effective closure by this date.  We have pledged to work closely with our partners, contractors and stakeholders to ensure that the past and future economic benefits of key programmes and assets continue to deliver the greatest economic value for the South East and value for money for the taxpayer.

Assets and Liabilities

As part of ensuring a professional closure of the Agency, we have been working with Government, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and local partners to agree a framework for the disposal and transfer of our assets and liabilities, which will further economic development in the South East and contribute to the national deficit reduction. On 6 July 2011 the Government announced that our assets will transfer to the HCA under a stewardship arrangement by 19 September 2011.

Commenting on Mark Prisk’s announcement on the transfer of RDA assets and liabilities, Oona Muirhead, Chief Executive of the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), said: "We have always stated that we want to see a future model of ownership whereby sites are developed to maximise local economic outcomes and where local partners are able to influence decisions. The Statement by Mark Prisk today on the transfer of our assets and liabilities under a stewardship arrangement to the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) includes both of these aims. SEEDA, together with the RDA network, will work closely with Government to achieve the transfer of all remaining land assets, liabilities and associated staff by 19 September 2011, ensuring that our staff's extensive experience and skills are available to carry forward the valuable work started by the Agency.
