Eleven green projects apply for EU funding opportunities

13 May 2009

POWER is a €5.8m (£5.2 million) interregional programme, led by the SEEDA, supported by the Environment Agency and co-funded through INTERREG IVC. South East England is heading up this high profile programme involving six other EC regions, Stockholm (Sweden), Noord-Brabant (Netherlands), Malopolska (Poland), Emilia-Romagna (Italy), Tallinn (Estonia), Andalucía (Spain).

In the context of ambitious EU targets for climate protection, the POWER Regional Initiative explores ways to move towards a low carbon economy at regional level, in particular by reformulating regional development strategies and policy instruments and identifying effective forms of sub-regional action which also contribute to regional competitiveness.

Eleven applications were received involving 44 organisations across the partner regions under the first call for proposals.

Kathy Vuillaume , European Programme Manager at SEEDA, said: "This is a great opportunity for organisations to access catalyst funding to support green projects and to exchange best practice with other European regions in their contribution towards EU Renewable Energy/Climate targets. I am delighted to see a good participation from South East England in this first call."

The POWER partner regions will now begin the assessment of all the applications. A decision on approved projects will be made public in early Summer 2009. A second round for funding is likely to open mid October if funding remains available.
