A27/Lewes Road junction to open before Christmas

17 December 2010

Improvement works to the A27 / Lewes Road junction in Brighton have been completed this week, with the junction opening to traffic next week.

The scheme, funded by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and led by the Brighton & Hove City Council, will allow for the development of the Brighton and Hove Albion FC’s Community Stadium next year and create a new gateway between the city centre and the universities. It will also support the creation of new higher education and research facilities along the city’s ‘Academic Corridor’ and provide a new entrance to the University of Sussex.

Full completion of the works will take place on 10th January 2011, when the existing Falmer House Road access to the University of Sussex from the A27 will be closed.

Gilly Bartrip, Area Director for Sussex, at SEEDA, said “The completion of the improvement works at the Lewes Road junction marks an important step in our work to support the growth of the local economy in Brighton. Our £5m investment here has been able to provide a firm basis for future investment opportunities in the area and deliver significant changes to the key gateway to the city. It will also support the delivery of the new AMEX Community Stadium.”

Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council Mary Mears said:  "We are pleased to be involved in delivering these important improvement works.  These will support the Albion's new stadium and deliver significant numbers of jobs in the area.  They will also serve the wider Academic Corridor along the Lewes Road and improve access to the Keep, the proposed new records centre being developed in partnership with East Sussex."

The works began in October 2009.
