Responsibility for economic development and regeneration in England is being passed onto successor bodies, including Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and central Government departments
Our objective is to ensure a professional and cost effective closure by this date. We have pledged to work closely with our partners, contractors and stakeholders to ensure that the past and future economic benefits of key programmes and assets continue to deliver the greatest economic value for the South East and value for money for the taxpayer.

Closing SEEDA
The Government has announced that as part of its new policy on economic development all Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), including SEEDA, will close by 31 March 2012.
We are committed to closing in a highly professional way and have pledged to work closely with our partners, contractors and stakeholders to ensure that the past and future economic benefits of key programmes and assets continue to deliver the greatest economic value for the South East and value for money for the taxpayer.
During our final financial year, we will have a £27m budget to deliver business support programmes up to their closure or transfer. We will also continue to manage European funding for the South East until transfer to government departments and to partners within the region on 1 July 2011; and we are working with the Government and with local partners to take forward options for the future ownership and development of our £108m land and property assets and liabilities.
As we move closer to closure, we will need a smaller organisation to deliver our work. On 5 April 2011 we launched a formal 90-day consultation period. All of SEEDA’s 220 staff were put at risk of redundancy and given indicative leaving dates. Up to 140 staff will have left by the start of July either through transfer to other bodies taking on SEEDA programmes, or through redundancy. Staff numbers will further reduce during 2011/12 as programmes are handed over or closed. By March 2012 only five or six staff will remain, who will oversee closing the final accounts after SEEDA has closed.
