SEEDA played a major role in safeguarding economic activity through the campaign to save the Portsmouth Naval Base. The campaign ensured 17,000 jobs at the base and 35,000 jobs and 750 businesses in the wider supply chain were retained as well as contracts worth around £680m.

SEEDA's major contributions included commissioning a socio-economic impact assessment of closing, minimising or expanding the Portsmouth Naval Base, using the results to increase Government awareness and stimulate a major debate.

SEEDA also used its networks to engage the media and hold meetings with MPs and senior civil servants across Government. SEEDA's impressive partnership working was also instrumental in the Government's decision to expand the naval base by building two new super-carriers expected to create and sustain 10,000 jobs both nationwide and in Portsmouth.
