| SEEDA Chairman James Brathwaite CBE discusses business with Chancellor Alistair Darling in Southampton. |
Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Cabinet today visited Southampton to see first-hand how SEEDA has boosted South Hampshire’s economy.
Today’s launch of Real Help Now builds on SEEDA’s investment of £120 million in the South Hampshire economy over the past eight years.
After welcoming the Prime Minister to the region at today’s Cabinet meeting in Southampton, SEEDA Chairman James Brathwaite CBE met Chancellor Alistair Darling to outline the agency’s role in supporting economic growth.
SEEDA is continuing to invest in skills, knowledge-based employment and world-class technology. In addition, plans for a Solent Innovation and Growth Team are expected to assist 250 high-growth companies in the area.
Mr Brathwaite said: “The South East is the engine room of the UK economy. We must continue to invest in that success as our region has the potential to lead the way out of recession.
"SEEDA’s role in encouraging the growth and diversification of the South Hampshire economy has become even more vital in these tumultuous times. We will be focused on growing skills and businesses engaged in innovation, research and development and high-tech manufacturing, and bringing forward development sites and infrastructure for potential employment."
Mr Brathwaite emphasised that SEEDA’s focus was not only to help businesses survive the crisis in the short term, but to also invest in preparation for the upturn to ensure a stronger emergence from the global recession.
